Day 319 - 27/07/2014 : Montseny road

Autumn become the unhidden wonderful season when you are living near the forests. 30 minutes driving from Vilassar and Maresme shire we could visit a fantastic natural park which is governing central Catalonia, we talk about Montseny.

Road covered by brown sheets, trees falling to the ground and a wide variety of fauna from Mediterranean to alpine are the main tendencies. There are also a large number of megalithic structures in the park.

Looking forward to going there again !

Day 318 - 26/07/2014 : Collada de Toses and Vall de Ribes in summer

Climibing up Collada de Toses we leave Vall de Ribes on our left side. Progressively we are reaching enough height to stop the car and be astonished by such a dramatic scenary.

Collada is located between Ripollés and Baixa Cerdanya shires. The top has 1800m height inside a space between Cadi-Moixeró massif and Vall de Núria mountains.

Looking to the East we can find the impressive Vall de Ribes range.

Fantastic !

Day 317 - 25/07/2014 : Driving to La Molina

Once you've reached Collada de Toses top you have to take the decision to continue towards Puigcerdà or take a time surrounded by beautiful mountain while going to La Molina.

Why not a rally in Pyrenees? Driving to La Molina into GI-400 is a delightful experience, dramatic landscapes come across whereas we are trying to control the high speed.

We will reach La Molina soon, and a bit later Masella, other stunning town located in our mountains.

Will you guess how beautiful in winter this panorama is?

Day 316 - 24/07/2014 : Ribes de Fresser church

Ribes de Freser is the administrative and economic center of the valley (once called ‘Valle Petrariense’). It is at the confluence of the three main rivers of Vall de Ribes: Rigard, Segadell, and Freser. These rivers design a Y-shaped village located at the valley bottom and protected by the high mountains that surround it.

The village, documented in the 10th century, was born under the protection of Castell de Sant Pere and within the parish church Santa Maria, shown in our today's picture. In Medieval times, it was a royal village which belonged to the County of Cerdanya, where the sotsvegueria of Ribes was founded.

The mild weather in the summer, the beauty of its surroundings, the streams of mineral water, and its proximity to the main ski resorts make the village a privileged place to spend your summer or winter vacation.

Day 315 - 23/07/2014 : Nuria Sanctuary, catalan donkey

At Vall de Núria they have always taken great care in the upkeep and respect for our surroundings: air, water, land, natural resources, flora and fauna.

This heritage belongs to all of us, which is why all activities in the area, the valley’s services, buildings and facilities have always been implemented with the criteria of respect for and conservation of the environment in mind.

The best example is the little farm settled on the left side of the Sanctuary with some Catalan donkey living freely.

Amazing !

Day 314 - 22/07/2014 : Nuria Sanctuary, impressive panorama

Nuria bring us a impressive panorama whatever the season was. In summer, green from fields is merged with brown from the hills and the blue sky.

In winter, white covers at all. Located in the middle of the Eastern Catalan Pyrenees and surrounded by peaks of almost 3000 metres, Vall de Núria, thanks to its magnificent scenery and easy access, is a privileged place to visit, admire and experience the Pyrenees mountains.

Wonderful !!!

Sunday 27 July 2014

Day 313 - 21/07/2014 : Nuria Sanctuary, Creu d'en Riba

Arrival in Núria will never leave us feeling indifferent. Emerging from under the lake, leaving the tunnel, it is often accompanied by an excited Ohhhhhhhhhhh! There are also many people who, once they have arrived, like to go on a short excursion to stretch their legs, take a walk to get up an appetite, take a special photograph, and those that are lucky enough to see a wood-chuck, a hare, a wild sheep or a chamois (you'll have to get up early!), to envelope themselves in myths and legends while visiting places steeped in history.

One of these excursion reach the Creu d'en Riba where you will be able to take wonderful pictures. What do you think about today's photo?

Day 312 - 20/07/2014 : L'Escala Festa Major in September

L'Escala Festivity finish with a relevant ship parade around the main beach. Small sailing boats enter to the harbour with its white extended sails and lighted to create wonderful reflects on the sea.

The spectacle is said to be one of the best summer Costa Brava nights, in fact, the town is crowd for this special night and people leads briskly to the beach before the parade's begin.

Definitely, there isn't better way to finish a festivity !

Day 311 - 19/07/2014 : Ter's mouth

The Ter is a river in Catalonia (northeastern of the Iberian Peninsula) that rises in Ulldeter at an approximate altitude of 2400 meters, at the foot of a glacial cirque delimited by the nearby peaks of el Bastiments, el Gra de Fajol, or el Pic de la Dona.

It runs through the comarques of Ripollès, Osona, Selva, Gironès, and Baix Empordà, discharging into the Mediterranean Sea at l'Estartit. The Ter follows a course of 208 kilometers and drains an area of approximately 3010 km2; its basin is described by a dendritic and exorheic drainage pattern.

Annually, an average of 840 hm3 of water is moved by the river, with an average flow rate of 25 m3/s at its mouth. Although its headwaters are in the Pyrenees, the Ter receives significant inflow from rivers in the middle and lower plains. Thus it is susceptible to flooding in both the spring and the autumn.

Spectacular !

Day 310 - 18/07/2014 : Pals, Sant Pere Romanesque church

Pals is dominated by the church Esglesia de Sant Pere, it truly towers over the small picturesque town.

We learned that the Esglesia de Sant Pere originates from the year 944. The church has been changed so many times in the course of the time that it is now an amalgam of roman, Gothic and baroque styles.

We walked our way up and once in front of the church we also saw the higher located former bell tower "Torre des hores" (tower of the hours) which rises into the sky as the only remnant of a castle from the 11 and 12 century.

You spend some time to visit this amazing town whenever you come to Empordà !

Day 309 - 17/07/2014 : Pals, gothic streets

Pals has a historic centre on a hill surrounded by plains with a medieval Romanesque tower built between the 11th and 13th centuries, known as the Torre de les Hores (Tower of the Hours). A clock tower, it is 15 metres (49 ft) high.

The Gothic Quarter of the town has been substantially restored and there are cobbled streets interrupted by semicircular arches, façades with pointed arched windows and stone balconies. The town wall contains four square towers which date from the 4th century.

The Josep Pla viewpoint (from which can be seen the fields of Empordà and the Medes Islands), the Plaça Major, the tombs in the Carrer Major and the Romanesque church of Sant Pere are other features of the town.

Superb !

Day 308 - 16/07/2014 : Montgrí Massif

We are walking today on the slopes of Montgrí Massif in the border of Alt Empordà shire when we were able to take a impressive panorama with L'Estartit and Medes Islands further.

The Montgrí Massif stretches from east to west north of the town of Torroella de Montgrí, sheltering it from the Tramontana northern wind. Local people call it simply "el Montgrí".

This long mountain formation looks like a sleeping bishop seen from afar. The Montgrí Massif is topped by an ancient fortress in the middle, the Montgrí Castle, a challenging fortress to be reached. Local people say the castle is the ring on the sleeping bishop's hand.

Would you like to climb to the castle?

Day 307 - 15/07/2014 : Bellcaire streets and houses

Bellcaire is strategically located between l'Estartit and L'Escala on inland Empordà. Being limit between Baix and Alt Empordà this stunning and quiet town give us the possibility for peaceful walks inside its colorful and ordered streets.

You shouldn't forget to visit Sant Joan de Bedenga church to admire the Romanesque paints inside. On the other hand the town is known to be the birth place of Tito Vilanova, the Barça coach in 2013 who unfortunately dead few months ago.

For more information go to the website

http://www.terresdegirona.cat/baix_emporda_bellcaire_esg_sant_joan.htm

Enjoy your visit !

Day 306 - 14/07/2014 : Bellcaire Church

Definitely, Empordà shire's isn't only beaches and Costa Brava landscapes. We might find a lot of interesting places in the countryside and some of them are related to a group of medieval towns mostly located in Baix Empordà.

The first one we are going to reference is Bellcaire d'Empordà. The main church located at Plaça Major governs the town and leads to visit it, above all the Romanesque church of Sant Joan.

You should think to give up laying on the beach some day !

Day 305 - 13/07/2014 : Full of birds on L'Escala sunset

From L'Escala harbour we were able to take a beautiful summer sunset with a lot of birds playing in the sky.

The summer was finishing but there were things to do yet in Costa Brava, in fact 'Festa Major' in L'Escala is held at the beginning of September when the town shines and people were looking forward to spending their last holiday days.

We were lucky because it isn't easy to find a group of birds just in the way to the sun, we enjoyed that moment.

Wonderful !

Day 304 - 12/07/2014 : Empordà Queen

Empordà countryside can be merged with such a beautiful face as today's picture is shown.

You ought to find a little hill to admire the fields and have enough height to take a panorama. Then put the beauty between your camera and the landscape and that's all, best picture of the day !

Enjoy trying it !

Monday 14 July 2014

Day 303 - 11/07/2014 : Cami de Ronda to Golfet surroundings

Golfet may be reached from the urbanization with the same name, having to go down some stairs, after parking your vehicle.

It is also possible to reach the cove from the heart of Calella de Palafrugell walking along the coastal path (Cami de Ronda), a journey that is covered in about 35 minutes. Golfet cove begins to glimpse the same reddish rock tones as Cap Roig (Red Cape), next to it. This color with the green of the pines almost touching the sea and turquoise clear waters, give the typical character of wild beauty to the cove, features also shared with many others in the Costa Brava.

Wonderful !

Day 302 - 10/07/2014 : Inside the Paradise

Located almost at the foot of Cap Roig Gardens, Cala del Golfet is the southernmost beach in Calella de Palafrugell, just before reaching the coastal area of Mont-ras village.

This is a rustic and picturesque cove, surprisingly little known in the Costa Brava. Its location away from the center of Calella de Palafrugell, where you’ll find other coves very interesting too as the Canadell, Port-bo, etc. makes it the great unknown in the area. However, the rugged beauty of Cala el Golfet is very different from the rest of coves in the village.

Enjoy it !!!

Sunday 13 July 2014

Day 301 - 09/07/2014 : El Golfet, Paradise Lost

Here our Catalan Paradise, Golfet cove and beach.

This landscape help me thinking about we've beaches in top of Europe, probably fighting against Croatian and Sardinian  beaches. Undoubtedly, for us is the best beach in Costa Brava, it's a difficult choice to do because the large number of beautiful beaches around Empordà but Golfet has some special charm.

Probably the rocky landscape, difficult to access therefore avoiding crowd and the breathtaking views jump into an easy conclusion.

Come on, only a few stairs and you will be able to enjoy into the paradise !

Day 300 - 08/07/2014 : Paradise

We are going to spend 4 days in the paradise, definitely it deserves that. But, what's the paradise? How can find it?

We have been looked for the Catalan paradise for ages and we think we found out it two years ago, we were walking on Cami de Ronda from Calella de Palafrugell to the North when we discovered a hidden cove we will never forget.

Look at the paradise and carry on reading the blog, the name will be soon announced !!!

Saturday 12 July 2014

Day 299 - 07/07/2014 : Poetry on the sea

When you are walking on Cami de Ronda starting in Calella de Palafrugell looking for the paradise you will be able to real a beautiful poetry from one of our best poets in history, Joan Maragall.

He talked about the beauty of Costa Brava seaside, merging green pines with blue sea. Maragall was born in Barcelona in 1860 and died in Barcelona too in 1911. He was a Catalan poet, journalist and translator, the foremost member of the modernisme movement in literature. His manuscripts are preserved in the Joan Maragall Archive of Barcelona.

As you can see, you can learn anything in every time, even going to the Paradise.

Day 298 - 06/07/2014 : L'Escala sunset

We were walking quietly by the seaside when the sunset came to us. There were some blue clouds in the sky and the colorful spectacle begun.

Clouds were colored in orange and yellow giving a reason to put off temporary our walk and stand up looking to the sky.

Don't forget the place : Platja del Rec del Molí, amazing !!!

Sunday 6 July 2014

Day 297 - 05/07/2014 : Catalan towel

There isn't best option for a Catalan to be enveloped in a Catalan towel after having a refreshed bath.

I bought this special cloth few years ago and it has traveled around the world since that time : Mexico, Rep. Dominicana, our lovely Croatia, France, Seychelles and finally Spain, the Catalan towel has been seen in the best world beache.

The fact is I wasn't able to buy another one therefore I have to keep in good condition to be shown every summer whenever we go.

Visca Catalunya Lliure !

Day 296 - 04/07/2014 : Taking a bath !

Suddently, the captain stop the boat and cried: 'Time to bath !!!!'

We were at the entrance of Cala Mongó just passing Punta del Milà, and we were able to enjoy the landscape, the pristine waters and have a refreshing bath.

It was early September therefore the Costa Brava water was in the best state, warmer than other months due to continuous summer warming.

Fantastic time we had !!!

Day 295 - 03/07/2014 : Cala Mongó

Coming back to L'Escala we were able to admire Cala Mongó beauty.

Mongó is a hill near L'Escala giving name to a district town. The hill is governed by a unused lighthouse but the most attractive sight from this place is the beach and its cove: Cala Mongó.

A large number of people spend their holidays here because the hill is plenty of hotels and apartments. Even though you may think it's a crowded place, it isn't exactly true, undoubtedly we have to say it's  more quiet than l'Escala.

Definitely, a place to take into account to spend some days !

Day 294 - 02/07/2014 : Inside Foradada

As I said yesterday, little boats were able to look inside Foradada but it wasn't our situation, we were sailing with a comfortable boat not little enough to enter.

Anyway, we admired the spectacular rock shapes probably created since thousand of years due to marine erosion.

The captain approached as long as he could and we looked at such a little boat entering a cave, it was amazing !!!

The journey didn't finish there, the best was close to come !

Day 293 - 01/07/2014 : La Foradada

Roca Foradada is a Costa Brava located in the coastal line between L'Estartit and L'Escala.

Departing from L'Escala you will reach after Farriola cave, all within Mongrí range, on the other hand, if you take a boat from L'Estartit you will see it few miles after passing Medes islands.

The hole created in the big rock allow little boats to give it over, becoming an interesting attraction for tourist.

Would you like to try?

Day 292 - 30/06/2014 : Punta Ventosa

Being in L'Escala we took a boat to have a tour by the coastal line near the town and we were able to discover amazing places as Punta Ventonsa, a few miles after passing Cala Mongó.

A steeped rock leads to the sea and we though how dangerous walking on the top would be, but it was a quite September morning and the crowd had came back to home.

The sea was calmed therefore some people were sailing near the rocks, did they feel fear when we arrived?

Let's continue, it had wonderful places to see that morning !
